Fright-A-Thon is my baby here at THS. I started it four years ago, in 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was a way for me to distract myself and, hopefully our audience from the horrors going on outside. From that first year, it grew to a month and a half of content, then expanded into two months. We’re not expanding again, but here is the rationale for expanding the calendar.
Christmas and those holidays get to swallow up the majority of December, November, and part of January. Why not Halloween? September is a month of going back-to-school and residual heat from the summer. Now it’s another month of pumpkins, serial killers, ghosts, ghouls, specters, goblins, and things that go bump in the night.
I know for myself, that change from August 31st to September 1st is a big one. It might not mean much here in Southern California; the weather is still gross out, but it does signal that change is in the air. Those blinding lights of summer, pastel colors, the yellows and reds of Summer mix together and turn into orange. Those summer parties die out, and the coming of Labor Day signifies that the harvest is near. Those shadows that were thin start to lengthen, and creepy crawlies come out to bask in the cool air. That fear of the dark erupts once again from the back of your neck to your brain. Things that were once thought to be long gone might start appearing in those shadows. The goblins, ghouls, ghosts, monsters, specters, zombies, serial killers, and anything else that goes bump in the night gain power.
What The Hell Is Fright-A-Thon?
For those reasons and plenty of others, we do Fright-A-Thon. But some of you might be asking, what is Fright-A-Thon, and what 5th grader thought of the name? Well, it means that every work day (Monday-Friday), you’ll get at least one article detailing, going over, celebrating, or breaking down something about the fun and spirit of Halloween. I do most of these the day of. There’s not a whole lot of planning going into it.
