The new Netflix series, The Midnight Club is based on an old Christopher Pike book of the same name. The series tells the story of a group of 7 terminally ill kids in hospice. They reside at the Rotterham Home and meet in secret at midnight every night to tell each other scary stories.

THE MIDNIGHT CLUB IS NOT ARE YOU AFRAID OF THE DARK

The premise of this series is really easy to compare to our friends at Nickelodeon in the Midnight Society. However, this time around The Midnight Club not only tells scary stories, but also a fright tale in real life. Iman Bensen (Black-AF) leads the ragtag band of kids on a journey through the Rotterham Home’s past. She has come across the story of an old patient who came in terminally ill, but left fully healed! There is some sort of magic, entity, or cult ritual going on here. And there’s nothing anyone can do to stop her from saving herself and her friends.

Along with these great kids, the woman running the facility is Heather Langenkamp! Yes, Nancy from the Nightmare on Elm Street film franchise. I love that they’re using a horror icon such as herself in order to tell a scary story.

The team behind the Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass series are behind The Midnight Club and it shows. The series is creepy, haunting, and scary with great ghost stories. Most episodes are broken down into the front half Bensen dragging along the other kids on her journey of figuring out the mystery. Then halfway through the group meets in their secret place to tell mostly new ghost stories each episode. Sometimes the ghost stories have to do with what the kids are going through, but mostly they’re just really entertaining one-offs.

That being said, I found every episode to be entertaining with fun twists and turn, but also incredibly slow. Like, a snail’s pace. I can’t for the life of me figure out why. Each episode is roughly 40-ish minutes long, but they feel like I’m watching an hour+. What is going on? Yes, Midnight Mass is slow, but Hill House isn’t. Other than that, I found The Midnight Club to be a fun ride and great series to get you into the Halloween season.
