It seems like Star Wars keeps losing the favor of its stars. John Boyega now says he’s “moved on” from the franchise.
Over the weekend Boyega posted an Instagram photo of himself preparing to return to set on his next project. A fan commented, “Force Finn in action with Green lightsaber dressed in black is all I want from the next SW film!” Boyega responded to the comment “lol no thank you. I’ve moved on” with a heart emoji.
Boyega had previously expressed disappointment with his character’s treatment in the latest Star Wars trilogy. Many fans felt Finn’s introduction as a former stormtrooper was never properly explored in the following movies.
“The Force Awakens I think was the beginning of something quite solid,” Boyega told Variety. “The Last Jedi, if I’m being honest, I’d say that was feeling a bit iffy for me. I didn’t necessarily agree with a lot of the choices in that and that’s something that I spoke to Mark [Hamill] a lot about, and we had conversations about it. And it was hard for all of us because we [Finn, Rey, and Poe] were separated.”
When Disney+ announced it would be working on a number of Star Wars TV shows, Boyega said he wouldn’t be interested in continuing his role on the platform.
How do other stars feel about the franchise?
Boyega’s co-stars Daisy Ridley and Oscar Isaac have both said they would hesitate to return for another Star Wars movie.
“[I’m] happy and feeling fulfilled that the task is complete. So I can’t imagine what it would be that would make me want to redo this thing or revisit it,” Isaac told Variety.
Both stars seemed to feel their stories in the franchise had wrapped up and didn’t need to be revisited.
“It would have to be so extraordinary [to return]…I don’t know if that’s possible,” said Ridley.
Long-time Star Wars actor Sam Witwer also expressed his disappointment with the latest trilogy.
“Look, if you like it, awesome. It’s not as meaningful to me because I can’t really reconcile that mythology with George’s. But that’s just my opinion, you know? My personal take is I think a Star Wars where the moral of the story is ‘throw down your weapon, don’t hurt your family, love or fear.’ I think that’s superior than a Star Wars where you win by melting the bad guy’s face off,” Witwer said.
