A PG-13 cut of Deadpool 2 will be finding its way to theaters this December under a new name.
Deadline reports that the re-released film will be named Once Upon A Deadpool. The new version of the film will be edited down to fulfill PG-13 standards and will have a 12-day run from December 12th to Christmas Eve on December 24th.
The tamer, more family-friendly cut contradicts the franchise’s hard-R philosophy. The Deadpool films have dedicated themselves to remaining faithful to the source material which includes its fair share of blood splatter and profanity.
With that in mind, the film’s star/executive producer Ryan Reynolds confessed that the new version only happened due to certain concessions being made.
“Fox has been asking for a PG-13 basically since the start in 2006, I’ve said no since 2006. Now, this one time, I said ‘Yes’ on two conditions. First, a portion of the proceeds had to go to charity. Second, I wanted to kidnap Fred Savage. The second condition took some explaining…”
Once Upon A Deadpool includes new footage with Ryan Reynolds and Fred Savage that spoofs the bedtime story scenes from The Princess Bride. When Deadline reached out to Fred Savage for his thoughts, they were in true Deadpool marketing fashion:
“While my participation in this film was anything but voluntary. I am happy to learn that Fudge Cancer will be the beneficiary of this shameless cash grab.”
One dollar from every ticket sold for Once Upon A Deadpool will go to the F-ck Cancer campaign which is joining the PG-13 effort and temporarily changing its name to Fudge Cancer.
